Hi all, This has been an insanely exciting, record breaking year at Flipora which is a discovery engine that recommends new websites to users based on their interests. This was the year the Flipora rocketship truly crossed over into the mainstream in terms of usage and we have a lot to announce. Let’s get started.
1. Flipora has now crossed 25M users worldwide
Flipora has been almost doubling in users every year for the last few years and this was the case in 2013 also. We are currently at over 27M users! We also had an all-time high in new user registrations of ~100K in a single day. And nearly 1/3rd of our users visited Flipora in the last month! This is a huge milestone for us and we have you, our users, to thank for all the support over the years. This was also the year we made the Top 10 list of social media sites for sharing alongside Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, etc. This is just the beginning and we’re excited to see where we will be a year from now.
Flipora is among the Top 10 Social Media Sites in the World for sharing articles (alongside Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin etc.)
To give you a sense of the scale at which we operate at, Flipora’s personalization and recommendation module analyzes 100M websites each day which is roughly 25X the size of the English wikipedia.
Flipora’s revenues are scaling fast on the back of strong user growth
Flipora has been profitable for a while now with revenues growing fast. We introduced ads in the Flipora product and given our significant growth in users and traffic our revenues are growing extremely fast also. Growing our revenues means that Flipora has significant resources to invest in our technology and product. Vijay and I have always taken a long term view to building our product and company and one part of that has been our focus on having a sound and highly scalable business model.
3. Flipora is now mobile web optimized:
We have optimized the Flipora website to be more mobile web friendly. 50% of our new users in the US sign up via mobile
Over the last year, we’ve seen a pretty astounding increase in our mobile user base. Today about 25% of our new users worldwide sign in via mobile and in the US mobile accounts for 50% of our new users. We have optimized the Flipora website to be more mobile web friendly. Later this year we expect to release our very first mobile app. Stay tuned!
4. Flipora now available in over 10 languages.
Given Flipora’s strong international growth we are also happy to announce translations in 10 languages. The languages Flipora supports now are German, Spanish, French, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Portuguese, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
5. Improved Personalization:
One part of what makes Flipora’s recommendation engine great is the implicit personalization we are able to do. Flipora uses state of the art machine learning algorithms to automatically infer what topics users like based on a user’s web browsing history and Facebook data. This is in addition to users explicitly following topics and other users.
What makes Flipora’s recommendation engine great is the implicit Personalization
One of the components of Flipora’s recommendation engine is our personalization module (that we call ‘FlipCat’) that can analyze a user’s Web Browsing history data, data from Facebook, etc. and categorize it to build a fine grained profile of the user’s interests. This helps the recommendation engine suggest interesting websites on topics that we know users will love. We now have a public facing demo of FlipCat for you to play with at http://ai.flipora.com. If you’re interested in an API for Flipcat, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. FlipCat is still in beta and we expect the accuracy to continue to increase. You can give a url or a piece of text as input and see it categorized into a 3000 class topical taxonomy. On our tests we’ve observed accuracies of ~60%.

In the coming weeks there’s lots to look forward to from Flipora. There is a big update to the core Flipora recommendation engine featuring more topics, even better website recommendations and seamless implicit personalization. Also coming is a complete visual redesign of the core product. Our first since 2012. We’re sure you’ll love it.
